Statewide Towing Association Launches Towing Traffic Incident Reporting System

Statewide Towing Association (STA) is pleased to announce the creation of the Towing Traffic Incident Reporting System (TTIRS).  This national, online, and voluntary reporting system, gives the towing industry a new way to report struck-by and near-miss events involving tow operator safety. The primary goal of TTIRS is to collect and quantify data so member associations can utilize the data to advocate for Move Over enforcement and education, and to develop safety protocol and training for the towing industry.

A near-miss incident is defined as an unintentional, unsafe occurrence involving a tow operator in a traffic incident management area or work zone, that could have resulted in an injury, fatality, or property damage. A struck-by incident is any incident where a tow operator, or their work vehicle, is hit by another vehicle or object within a traffic incident management area or work zone, resulting in an injury, fatality, or property damage. Prior to the establishment of TTIRS, a national system for tracking road side struck-by and near-miss incidents involving tow operators did not exist.

Use of TTIRS is free for tow companies and operators to report incidents - no membership needed. Membership in TTIRS, however, grants users access to cumulative data and custom reports, and is open to state and national towing associations at a cost of $200 per year. Statewide Towing Association is pleased to welcome the Towing and Recovery Association of Ohio as a Charter Member of TTIRS.

Things to remember:

  • Incidents can be reported by a tow company representative or by a tow operator, or surviving family member.
  • Past incidents should be reported. Historical data is an important part of the database.
  • In order to maintain the integrity of the data and avoid duplicate entries, a contact name, email address, and phone number must be supplied. Identities will remain confidential and are for verification only and will not be shared.
  • All field displaying * are mandatory. Please take the time to fill out the form accurately and completely including optional information and photos. The integrity of the data is vital to the project.

For more information about TTIRS, contact Todd Chase, STA Vice President, at [email protected].
